History of Massage
|
Massage therapy is believed to be one of the oldest forms of medical treatment. First recorded in China during the second century B.C. in The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine, massage was mentioned as a recommendation for the treatment of certain ailments. In 3000 BC the Chinese book Cong-Fu of the Toa-Tse. is the Oldest known book written about massage. In 1800 BC in India, the Ayurvedic, Art of Life book included massage techniques as part of the traditional healing system and also prescribed massage for a variety of medical conditions. Physicians of ancient Greece and Rome utilized massage as one of the primary methods to treat pain. Egyptian tomb paintings show people being massaged.. In 460-380 BC- Hippocrates was taught by Herodicus to use friction to treat sprains and dislocations (called anatripsis-Greek for friction). It was thought that disease resulted from natural causes and the body has the power to heal itself. In the 100’s AD the First schools of massage were developed in china

In the 1850s- scientific massage therapy was introduced in the United States by two New York physicians, brothers George and Charles Taylor, who had studied in Sweden. Massage therapy had been used for many medical and psychiatric conditions until scientific breakthroughs in medical technology and pharmacology substantially changed the foundation of medicine in the West.

In 1927 New York State Society of Medical Massage Therapists (first massage association) and in 1939 the Florida State Massage Therapy Association Inc. (FSMTA) was first organized on June 15, 1939 one of the oldest massage organization, with 85 charter members. The first Massage Act was passed by the Florida Legislature in 1943.

Over the years, though massage faded in and out of our medical system, it seems there has always been an awareness of its inherent healing and therapeutic value. During the 1960s, a wave of interest in natural healing once again revitalized the practice of massage and it continues to be a popular method of dealing with stress. In 1980’s the Association of Bodywork and Massage Practitioners formed. Today massage has become more mainstream as the increased pace of life has created more stress related problems. In 1990 massage was protocol for fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) defined by the American College of Rheumatology In 1991 the Touch Research Institute was created. At the Touch Research Institute at the University Of Miami School Of Medicine, medical doctors are researching the beneficial effect of massage therapy on a variety of conditions such as stress-related disorders, depression and anxiety, pain, and auto-immune disorders. IN 1992 National Certification was established A 1997 U.S. survey showed that consumers spent between four to six billion dollars on massage, approximately 30 percent of the total amount of money spent on complementary and alternative medicine.

Massage may be the oldest and simplest form of medical care. The more we learn the more we realize healers of centuries ago had the right approach by healing with touch. This new knowledge is causing the revitalization of an old art to meet the needs of today’s stresses creating the thriving wellness industry of today.
